This is a helpful guide for first time dads or men whose wives are pregnant. I want to share this because as a woman I have experienced lots of difficulties when I was pregnant with my first and even my second. How I wished at that time that my husband would be more attentive to me and to my needs. Don’t get me wrong, my husband is a wonderful person. It’s just that it is a fact that during pregnancy, the needs of a wife differ emotionally, mentally, and even physically.
Ok dads, here we go…
Your wife needs to feel that you feel the same happiness and excitement of this stage in her life as a woman. She is more likely to talk about plans for the coming baby like your choice of names, your expectations of parenthood, and regular visits with the doctors, and the like. Sharing what she feels can give her a feeling of support from you and assurance that you will always be with her in every moment of this stage in your life together.
She needs to hear words of love, thoughtfulness, support and happiness from you as her partner. Women tend to crave more for attention and expression of love in terms of words in the same way as expression of love through physical contact, hugs, embraces and kisses.
When she starts to gain weight usually on the second trimester of pregnancy, make her feel she’s beautiful still. Telling her how beautiful she is and complimenting everything that is beautiful about her will strengthen her confidence which usually fades away when pregnant women start to experience ante-natal depression.
Ante-natal depression is common to pregnant women. Making sure that you have time together to talk and just be alone with each other, nurturing love and finding more time to be intimate will help prevent this.
Get involved in the preparation for the coming of your baby. Going shopping together and deciding on things that you need to buy for the baby will be great fun for both of you.
Give her a day when all she needs to do is rest – no cooking, no house chores… I used to love it when my hubby comes home when I was still pregnant and tells me that we are going to have dinner in our favourite restaurant. Isn’t that sweet and thoughtful – special dinner with the most special woman in your life. Remember that opportunity to go out together when the baby comes will be as rare as a blue moon for a while.
